Quarry Pool/City Park Task Force:  RECENT INFORMATION ON BOTTOM

Press Release From Weyerhaeuser And The Quarry Task Force To The Tenino Independent:

Weyerhaeuser and Tenino Citizens Continue Forestry Discussions

Many local citizens remain interested in Weyerhaeuser Company’s plans to harvest timber on lands in the Tenino area.  In late 2006, Weyerhaeuser applied for a road use permit to construct a road on a small portion of City Park property. The road would allow access to lands lying south of the park.  Weyerhaeuser later withdrew that request after the City and citizens expressed concerns about the planned harvest.

Representatives from the City of Tenino and the Quarry Task Force (QTF), a group of citizens interested in land use issues in and around Tenino, have continued discussions with Weyerhaeuser representatives.  Most discussions have focused on the City and QTF’s desire to expand the City Park near the quarry pool, the size and shape of an expansion, and potential access routes leading to Weyerhaeuser property.  The group is examining options to acquire a Weyerhaeuser-owned portion of the land adjacent to the park, by purchase and/or land trade, as well as funding options.

Weyerhaeuser is keeping the City and QTF informed as to timing of road construction planned to occur on its own land, and about timber harvests planned on Weyerhaeuser-owned lands near Tenino.  As of this date, road construction is underway on 35 acres located between Blumauer and Churchill Roads.  Harvest of that tract is scheduled for summer 2008.  Road construction and timber harvest on the 70-acre parcel Weyerhaeuser owns adjacent to the park have been voluntarily postponed pending resolution of access issues as well as acquisition and funding issues.

Mayor Jones, the QTF, and Weyerhaeuser meet monthly to continue discussions that will, hopefully, lead to a mutually acceptable solution.

Goals:

Preserve an adequate tree and under story buffer on the ridge above the Quarry Pool and City Park to keep the slopes stable and prevent wind damage to mature trees in the Tenino city park
•Preserve the range of community resources in the area, including the quarry, trails system, playing fields, and historic buildings.
•Restrict all future development in the buffer area
•Protect the beauty of one of Tenino’s nationally recognized historic places
•Maintain the biologic functionality of the Class “B” wetland, the Forested wetland, and the perennial stream area above the quarry pool and city park
•Prevent excess runoff to the city park and protect a vital aquifer recharge area for the Scatter Creek Basin

•Protect the migratory corridors historically and currently used by terrestrial, aquatic, and avian wildlife within the surrounding ecoregion.

•Expand the City Park where possible and develop an education trail system for the community.

Project Summary:

The Weyerhaeuser logging corporation owns approximately three tax parcels totaling 93 acres on the top of Blumauer Hill.  Two of the parcels totaling 70 acres adjoins the the Tenino City Park property to the south.  Current forest practice applications submitted by Weyerhaeuser to WDNR indicate that Weyerhaeuser plans to clear cut the entire 93 acres.  The Weyerhaeuser property extends within 10-20 feet from the top of our beautiful Quarry Pool.  An arborist retained by the city of Tenino has indicated that should Weyerhaeuser follow through with plans to log their entire property nearly all of the trees above the Quarry Pool (pictured above) would have to be logged as well to prevent them from blowing down in the absence of an effective wind break from the forest above.  The citizens have spoken and determined that this is an unacceptable burden to be placed on our most widely recognized natural and historic treasures.  The CPQP Task Force is working hard to coordinate a meeting with Weyerhaeuser to negotiate options that will be protective of the Quarry Pool and City Parks now and forever.  More information will be posted as it becomes available.
